Jake Watson Scores OSCAAR Modified Heat Victory at Sauble Speedway
SAUBLE BEACH, Ontario — Showing speed throughout the night, Jake Watson was able to pick up a checkered flag and a top-10 finish at Sauble Speedway.
Watson was fast from the beginning of the night, scoring a fifth in his first heat. He then ran inside the top-three throughout the second qualifier, escaping an incident ahead of him to score his first checkered flag of the 2022 campaign.
Starting third in the feature, he grabbed the advantage off of the drop of the green flag to lead the first eight laps of the feature, before being passed by the eventual race winner. He’d remain second until the race’s first yellow flag at Lap 10, though got stuck on the outside of the restart as he faded back to third. He continued to battle hard, running fourth as of the second yellow flag with 10 laps to go.
Stuck on the outside for the final restart, he fell back a couple more spots, ultimately crossing the finish line with a sixth-place finish.
It marks his second straight top-10 finish following an eighth at Sunset Speedway, placing him in a three-way tie for second in the series standings. He also currently leads the Rookie of the Year standings.
Watson will be back behind the wheel of the No. 88 Modified on Saturday, June 25 at Sunset Speedway.

Jake Watson Overcomes Adversity for Top-10 at Sunset Speedway
INNISFIL, Ontario — Despite the weekend starting off on a rough note, Jake Watson would able to persevere his way through for a top-10 finish at Sunset Speedway’s Spring Velocity.
The weekend did not start off on a good note, with Watson missing his first heat on Saturday as a result of mechanical issues during the practice session. The JW Motorsports / WW Racing team was able to make the necessary repairs, with Watson getting some valuable test laps underneath him on Sunday morning.
The speed shown where would translate into the qualifier, with him scoring a third-place finish, and ability to run amongst the guys whom finished top-five in points last season.
Starting 12th for the 40-lap feature, he would avoid contact on the opening lap when a fellow competitor spun around on the frontstretch. He would begin to make his way forward, breaking into the top-10 at the quarter-mark of the event, though fell back to 11th a couple laps later.
Despite the setback, Watson continued to push forward, working his way back into the top-10 at the halfway mark, avoiding a couple incidents ahead of him to keep his nose clean. The good fortune continued, with Watson finding his way up to eighth by the time the checkered flag fell.
Watson will be back behind the wheel of the No. 88 Modified on Saturday, June 18 at Sauble Speedway.

Jake Watson “Pretty Excited To Get Back On Track” In 2022
Watson. It’s a last name that comes up in racing conversations on a regular basis with multiple championships and victories attached. One of the names mentioned in those conversations would be Jake Watson.
“I’m blessed to be a part of a big racing family, but it doesn’t come with any pressure,” he said. “I just stick to doing my own thing and pave my own path for myself.”
Looking to do his own thing, Watson admits being excited to be behind the wheel of his OSCAAR Modified this season, with hopes of putting together a full season.
“My goals are definitely to improve on my best finish of sixth last year at Flamboro,” he added. “Score as many top fives as I can and hopefully secure a win along the way.”
Given not only his success, but history, it’s not a surprise to see he has Flamboro Speedway circled on the calendar for the 2022 campaign. Watson knows how to get around the Hamilton-based oval, as evident by previous go-karting and mini stock success.
“The biggest thing I’ve learned from Mini Stocks is definitely car handling,” he commented. “I raced mini stocks for a while and it definitely taught me a lot about driving and being respectful.”
When it came time to move to the modifieds from four-cylinder competition, Watson says the biggest surprise was the amount of grip compared to a mini stock and super stock.
Now knowing what to expect, the focus is “definitely being more consistent with the car and the adjustments we make.” He also hopes to avoid getting into trouble, something he unfortunately knows about being a part of one of Flamboro’s biggest mini stock wrecks.
“Worst wreck I’ve had was a couple years ago at Frostoberfest in the Mini Stock,” he recalled. “Coming out of turn four me and the No. 76 (Shawn Taylor) touched wheels and cut my Right Front down and went straight to the wall, and he ended up rolling.”
Now heading into 2022, Watson hopes to avoid any similar incidents, rather focusing on checkered flags and top-fives.

Jake Watson Hopeful Speed Turns into Podium Finishes in 2021
Last season when Jake Watson announced he was going to jump behind the wheel of a Queenston Chevrolet Buick GMC OSCAAR Modified, he was one of those rookies to keep an eye on in knowing the family history and his success in motorsports to date.
Ultimately, he did not disappoint in showing speed in both events at Jukasa Motor Speedway, including pacing a couple laps in his second showing. However, he would place outside the top-10 in both events as a result of mechanical gremlins.
“For this upcoming season, we just need to improve our car and get it running right,” he said. “Last year we showed the speed but had a lot of mechanical issues because it was a last minute deal.”
Watson plans to run the full schedule, along with a couple Mini Stock events on the side.
“My goals and expectations are to get a couple top-five’s under my belt and even a win,” he said. “We showed a ton of speed last year for not having a lot of luck and experience.”
With a couple wins under his belt at Flamboro Speedway in other cars, it’s no surprise he’s excited for Oktoberfest in October.
“The track I’m most looking forward to would be Flamboro,” he said. “I’ve only tested there a couple times and only raced at Jukasa with the mod, so it would be great to get out and burn some laps there and see how we do.”
While he has competed in Mini Stocks and Super Stocks in the past, Watson feels the appeal of the modifieds is the level of competition, in seeing the amount of talent and how close everyone is. That said, when it comes to his competition, he says he is keeping an eye on Andy Kamrath and TJ Edwards.
Watson will once again be behind the wheel of the No. 88, which comes from being a fan of Dale Earnhardt Jr. While he started his career in go-karts and Mini Stock with the No. 22 – also campaigned by both his uncle Glenn and father Wade, the switch to 88 came when he moved to Sunset Speedway with someone else having the number.
Based on his young experience to date, his advice to others who are hoping to reach his level is “to always keep your head in your shoulders, and be patient and never give up.”

2020 SEASON REVIEW
Mini stock
2 races at Flamboro
First one finished in the top 15 – carb issues
Second race was Frostoberfest – Finished 6th
Modified
2 races at Jukasa
First one DNF due to engine troubles
Second race, started outside pole finished 10th
Race recap for 2020 season
COVID put a damper on the 2020 racing season. Racing schedules across Ontario were shortened, no
fans were allowed in the stands and a limited number of crew members were allowed at the races.
Thanks to Gforce TV, many of the races were broadcasted live on YouTube.
Jake had the mini stock out twice in 2020 at Flamboro Speedway.
The first event brought carburetor troubles in practice. A quick trip back to the shop in Kitchener for
some of his crew members to get the spare carburetor which resulted in no qualifying for Jake. The
start of the race saw Jake start from the back. Jake made his way through the field and up to 6th place
when the spare carburetor decided to give out. Jake finished in the top 15.
The second event at Flamboro Speedway was the annual Frostoberfest. Jake had a fast car in practice
and time trials. Due to an invert, Jake started 10th . Jake made his way up to 5th where he was involved in
a mishap, that resulted in him going to the rear of the field. Charging from the back, Jake made his way
up front once again to finish 6th .
Jake strapped into the OSCAAR Modified for the first time at the half mile Jukasa Speedway in July. Jake
qualified outside pole in a field of over 25 cars. Just after the halfway mark, Jake was running 6th and
started to develop motor issues. This resulted in him pulling into the pits to end the race early.
The second event at Jukasa took place in August. Again, Jake would start outside pole. Jake took the
lead for a few laps. Unfortunately, the unsolved motor problems came back. This would result in
another DNF for Jake.
The 2021 schedules are starting to be finalized and published. Stay tuned for a complete schedule for

FULL-TIME MODIFIED RACING FOR WATSON IN 2020
Watson will be looking to run a full-time schedule in the OSCAAR Modified Series in 2020!
WATSON GRABS A 3RD OVERALL AT FROSTOBERFEST
The final race of 2019 for the Watson team would be Frostoberfest at Flamboro Speedway. The Mini stocks would see 5 lap group qualifying, and twin 50 lap races. Jake would go out and qualify p9 for the first 50 lap race. The race would go from Green to Checkered without any cautions and Jake finished in the 4th position. For the second feature, the lead lap cars would be inverted based on the finish of the first race, which made Jake start near the back of the field. around lap 25, Jake and another driver tangled coming out of turn four sending the two drivers into the outside wall, also sending the other driver onto his roof. The red flag would last about 30 minutes, and within that time Jake would check out how much damage his car had and it didn't look too bad other than body damage and a flat tire. After the red flag concluded, Jake brought his car into the pits where the team, among other helpers would get the car fixed and ready to go back out. After a mix-up in the pits, somehow a left front tire ended up being put onto the right front. This mistake made the car handle really bad, but Jake didn't give up. Jake started in the very back and drove his tail off to a 5th place finish. Posting a 4th place in the first race, and a 5th in the second, that would score Jake 3rd overall out of the 40 drivers that should up. A pretty solid way to end the Season!
ANOTHER SUPER STOCK START FOR WATSON IN THE #31w
After the race concluded at Jukasa, Mcferran offered Jake to run in the #31w again, this time at Sunset Speedway for the Velocity 250 weekend. Jake accepted again. The weekend didn't go completely as planned. The team didn't have any new tires, so they had to race the 50 lapper on older tires while everyone else had stickers on. The car handled good throughout practice and the heats on the Saturday. Rain came Saturday night and washed all the rubber away on the track. So come Sunday, the track was fresh and the car just wasn't the same as it was on Saturday. Jake struggled with a bad handling car through the whole race and also got spun around halfway. Jake managed to grab an 11th place finish.
WATSON CALLED UP TO RUN A SUPER STOCK AT JMS
After a couple weeks away from racing after the incident at Sauble, Jake got a call from Brandon Mcferran to run his second Super Stock at Jukasa Motor Speedway in the 2nd Annual Canadian Short Track Nationals. Jake would accept the offer, just ONE WEEK prior to the big race. He would go into the race never running the track before, and he also hasn't been in a Super Stock since mid season in 2018. Jake went out and grabbed a 2nd in his heat race, and ended up finishing in the 8th position in a stout 40 car field. Watson was very pleased to have run that well considering he had no experience in that car, and at that track.
WATSON GRABS WIN #4 AT FLAMBORO
Jake would grab win #4 on the season at Flamboro, then the 88 team travelled to Sauble speedway for the $600 to win race, ran top 2 the whole race then got wrecked out on the last lap. The wrecked forced the team to take a couple weeks off racing due to the front clip of the car was bent over 3 inches to the left. Unfortunately this incident ended Jake's hope's on running for a Championship at Flamboro.

Jake Watson Calls 2018 Campaign “A Season to Remember”
![Picture](/uploads/9/5/5/5/95554952/published/victory-ms.jpg?1540616268)
Competing in two different divisions throughout the 2018 season, Jake Watson experienced success at both ends of the spectrum.
“2018 was definitely a season to remember for sure,” he told SHORT TRACK MUSINGS. “There were a lot of ups and downs throughout the season. Capturing four feature wins in the Mini Stock and four in the Super Stock is what made the season so memorable.”
At Flamboro Speedway, the youngster was given the chance to share the Shawn Chenoweth’s No. 89C Super Stock with Andy Kamrath.
“To be given the chance to run a Super Stock for Shawn was definitely a great opportunity for me to get my feet wet in something other than a mini stock,” he said. “It meant a lot to go out there and prove I got what it takes to go out and win in a regular basis. And I feel like I did a good enough job to live up to Shawn’s, and my expectations.”
Watson was successful throughout the summer, scoring four feature wins, even while admitting that there was a lot of pressure to perform.
“Both of those guys have had so much success in this sport,” he added. “Both of them gave me a lot of pointers and tips to get me to where I am now.”
The success was there with the family owned No. 88 Mustang Mini Stock, as well, as Watson visited victory lane on four different times during the season.
“I think my biggest highlight of running the mini stock was every weekend we went out,” he said. “There isn’t really just one highlight I can point out. We went out and did our best and never went a weekend without one win.”
Having ran the mini stock through the years, he says the biggest challenge in making the step up to the super stocks was the competition level.
“The amount of competition that was out there on track week in and week out was definitely hard to race against,” he said. “The biggest difference between the Super Stock to the Mini Stock would definitely be the handling of the cars. They are so different it took me a while to figure it out.”
Watson would go onto add through his experience this year, he feels racing in Ontario is headed in the right direction.
“The sport in general has had a couple rough years, but I finally think that all the tracks throughout Ontario are going in the right direction,” he commented.
His own plans for 2019, though, remain up in the air as he admits he and his father Wade Watson are unsure what they’re doing yet, but will be “running the Mini Stock somewhere at some point throughout the season. We are also looking to move up in classes at some point as well.”

Another Successful Weekend For Jake In The #89c
June 16th, 2018
Jake was set to race for his second weekend in a row for the SCR team in the #89c Super Stock at Flamboro Speedway. He once again drew a low number for a starting spot and lined up 4th for the first feature. Going into turn one, the #72 slid up the track and Jake went through the middle of the 2 cars and gained the lead. Jake would then go on to win the first feature of the night. For the second feature, Jake lined up 4th once again. Jake fought tough on the high side once they took the green to gain the second spot over the #72. Jake would hold on to the second spot up until lap 18 when the #7 got around him on the bottom for p2. Jake would have the same results as the previous weekend with a win in the first feature, and a 3rd place finish in the second one.

Jake Watson Set to Move Up to Super Stock Division in 2018
December 27, 2017
After experiencing success in Mini Stocks over the past couple of years, Jake Watson is getting the opportunity to move up a division in 2018 to Super Stock.
“I think the opportunity is awesome,” he told Short Track Musings. “Can’t thank Shawn Chenoweth enough for having faith and trusting in me. I’m going to do the best I can and try to learn as much as possible and have good results at the same time. We will have some awesome sponsors and supporters returning, like Mike Schmidt at London Recreational, and a few others coming with me on my new adventure.”
Watson will run a Shawn Chenoweth Racing-owned entry, splitting seat time with veteran Andy Kamrath.
“It’s going to be a great experience being a Development Driver working with Shawn and Bob Chenoweth and Andy Kamrath after so many years in my dad’s Mini Stock, racing at tracks like Flamboro, Sunset, Sauble and Kawartha which gave me quite a bit of experience,” Watson noted. “Shawn has had so much success in anything he raced and always has fast cars. Andy will be a great driver to share the ride with; he’s also had a lot of success in the Pro Late Model and along with the mini stock. I think those guys will be great to work with.”
Going into the year, Watson says his goal is to focus on “learning as much as possible” while doing the best that he can, which could even include winning a couple of races. He proved he could get the job done before, winning two features last season at Flamboro Speedway.
“The 2017 season I had was an up and down one for sure,” he said. “Started off the season strong with a handful of consecutive top-five finishes which led to me winning two features in a row at Flamboro. Then we blew up and struggled to find a new motor for the rest of the year, and that made us sit out for almost the rest of the season. We also attempted to run in the 50th annual Autumn Colours Classic at Peterboro, but once again the motor didn’t quite hold up. A big thanks to Dave Middel who owns the No. 25 mini stock (home track – Sunset) for letting me pilot his car for the Frostoberfest at Flamboro Speedway. I had a blast, that car is fast!
“During the season, while I was waiting for a motor, I was lucky enough to be part of Treyten Lapcevich’s APC (Late Model) team. I enjoyed travelling with them from track to track, helping work on his car and his team taught me a lot while my dad was his spotter.”
Reflecting back, it’s no surprise the pair of victories are his most memorable of the year.
“My most memorable moment of 2017 would have to be winning 2 features in a row at Flamboro Speedway,” he commented. “Those being my first ever feature wins made it so much more of a memorable moment, being able to win them back to back.”
